Maple is the common name for the Acer genus of trees. Acer is taken from Latin and it means sharp, referring to the points on the maple leaves. There are over a hundred different species of maple and they are native to Asia, Europe, Africa, and North America. They can grow up to 45 meters (147') tall and their seeds are often referred to as "helicopters" or "whirlybirds" as they have wings and spiral down from the tree.
Maple wood is fine grained and very strong. It is a beautiful and light wood that is both subtle in nature and also able to stand out for it's uniqueness as a ring.
