Purpleheart (Peltogyne genus) is a tall and beautiful canopy tree native to Central and South America from Mexico to southern Brazil. Occurring in tropical rainforests they can grow up to 50 meters (164') tall and have a trunk diameter of up to 1.5 meters (5').
Purpleheart is prized for it's unique color and is a heartwood that actually changes color when it is cut, from a dull drown to a beautiful purple. It has a long, tight, and straight grain pattern that takes a finish well with a medium to high luster. It will very gradually darken with exposure to sunlight over the years, but usually retains it's purplish hue becoming a chocolate-purple color.
